NEED FOR SPEED 4 HIGH STAKERS DUE MARCH 24 OR THE 27th IN YOUR PC/PLAY STATION STORE:)

Last Updated March 27.03.1999

Ahhh yeah, we just got the playable version of High Stakes in our hands and it's fun as all get out. At about 80% complete, ai took to the High Stakes duel, in which you buy a car and race against another fella and several dozen cop cars through beautiful European countries. Oh, and then there's that supercop, but he won't get us. (Unless you see the last of the five movies, where Doug indisciminantly bashes straight into a stone wall...) Co check out these five new movies from our playable. And oh yeah, EA said it's definitely, absolutely, 'fer sure' working on the the currently obscene frame rates.

FERRARI F50

Looks like we've got another year of hot racing action for Pc/PlayStation, and who better to take the pole position than Electronic Arts and its Need for Speed series? The fourth title in EA's racing franchise is titled Need for Speed: High Stakes – the subtitle refers to the game's idea where not only your reputation is on the line, but also your car. You're racing for pinks, gang – so you better start honing your driving skills.

Faithful to the series' name, Need for Speed: High Stakes features licensed sportscars from all walks of life. You want the current list? Here you go:

BMW M5, BMW Z3, Ferrari 550, Maranello Ferrari F50, Lamborghini Diablo SV, Chevrolet Corvette C5, Pontiac Firebird T/A, Chevrolet Camaro Z28, Mercedes CLK GTR, Mercedes SLK 230, McLaren F1 GTR, Jaguar XKR, Aston Martin DB7, Chevrolet Caprice!!

And according to EA, there are much more to come. Many of the vehicles must be purchased, earned or won in the game's many modes of play: High Stakes, Hot Pursuit, and Tournament and Special Events.

In High Stakes, you and an opponent will put a vehicle on the line – the winner of the race literally takes the car away from the loser; it gets wiped from the loser's memory card and placed on the winner's.

The Hot Pursuit option is a revamped version of Need For Speed III's mode of the same name, where you try to elude cops in a high-speed chase. Throughout the pursuit, you'll hear cops alerting each other about your recklessness over the police scanner – use their chatter to learn where the speedtraps are and where the cops are hiding.

Finally, the Tournament and Special Events mode puts you in a position where you must utilize your winnings to fix your damaged cars or, situation willing, purchase new vehicles. You'll also be able to soup up existing cars with enhanced parts – that is, if the price is right.

Eight open-road tracks have been created for the new Need for Speed game. Other features include a random track event generator – the game's AI will constantly generate random events on the track during the race, from objects to neutral traffic. With this feature, no two laps are ever the same. The graphics engine has also been enhanced to feature actual damage to the car's exterior (which will also inhibit the vehicle's performance). Weather conditions will also change during play – adding another factor to the race. You'll also be able to customize the car's look, right down to the license plate.

           MORE INFO ABOUT THE GAME:

From what Electronic Arts says there will be more to come. Many of the vehicles
must be purchased, won, or earned in many modes of play in the game such as: High Stakes,
Hot Pursuit, Tournament and Special Events.

High Stakes mode involves you and your opponent putting both of your vehicles on
the line, by each of you inserting your own memory cards. The losers car will get wiped
and then placed on the winners card.

Hot Pursuit mode is like the NFS 3 Hot Pursuit where you have to elude the cops in
a nice high speed chase. During the chase you will hear radio chatter from the cops about
you and your wreckless driving. But the chatter will come in handy for you, allowing you
to know where the speed traps are, and where the cops are hiding. Another key feature of
High Stakes' Hot Pursuit mode, unlike the PSX version of NFS3 Hot Pursuit, is now you can
be the Cop and chase the other vehicles. However you must do this in a certain amount of
 time in order to win.

Now for the Tournament and Special Events mode information. This is a challenge, in
that you have to utilize your winnings to either fix your car and pay for repairs, purchase
a new car, or just buy some extra performace parts. Everything costs money. And hey, this
stuff aint cheap.

The newest game has been released today in the NFS Series. NFS 4: High Stakes is now available

Release Change
Some news that will make you wait a little longer for NFS4 PSX is that the release date has
been moved from March 24 to March 27. For more upcoming news, visit NFS4.COM!
Without a doubt, anyone who likes videogames in the least bit will dribble with joy
upon seeing the full-blown effect of Electronic Arts newest Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit.
Yes, that sounds like a gung-ho endorsement, but there is so much to like about it
that only an army could prevent me from playing it. Visually, it's a light-dance of
reflections, color, and engine-pushing brilliance. Technically, the balance of speed,
control, and special effects are so well orchestrated that only a limbless mongoloid rodent
with both its eyes gouged out would miss it. And this comes from a man who didn't like
either of the past Need For Speed titles.
 vwk2000 TO NFS3
EA has gone to the effects shed and sharpened its tools, and has thrown a truckload
of effort into making NFS look realistic, animate cleanly and quickly, and shine, reflect,
lens flare, etc. The number of reflections that appear on your car are eye-popping.
While most cars reflect the sky conditions, these reflect from the headbeams,
each curve of the car, windows, bumpers, hubcaps, you name it. The realtime lighting,
particularly in the night mode, is simply a spectacular site using either high or low beams.
Believable smoke effects are issued when players peel out, dirt sprays up when you hit
off-road surfaces, and water splashes and sends off waves when your pass through it.
The Pursuit mode really makes the game, pushing it far and above its predecessors.
It takes place in either day or night, one of many choices the game offers. Visually,
the nighttime aspects highlight a rack of graphic advances that prove EA's designers
have learned and mastered the advanced stages of PlayStation programming. Realtime
lighting enables you to light up the road as you corner turns and climb up hills,
and the cops' lights can be seen slowly from far away to bright and annoying when
they come close up. You know what is coming up, but only the area that your headlights
hit are viewable, which adds a sweet extra challenge. What is especially enticing is
when the pigs actually arrive: The whole screen fills with circling blue and red
lights that creates a feeling of fear and desperation. You'll have to watch out for
smart, double-teaming cops who lay down roadblocks and who know how to drive.
In fact, they're so smart they actually learn your driving patterns and emulate them
, pushing you to learn a variety of avoidance strategies.
Need For Speed III features a slightly disappointing number of tracks
(eight, plus one bonus track), each filled with alternate routes and shortcuts
perfect for dodging cops and traffic, and strategically placed for jumps,
avoiding roadblocks, and confounding your opponents. The game takes place
on mixed road surfaces, each of which feel and react differently, depending
on which car you've selected. As many as eight fully licensed cars, including
the Ferrari 550, Ferrari 355 F1, Italdesign BMW Nazca C2, Lamborghini Diablo
SV, Lamborghini Countach, and Jaguar XJR-15, are chooseable. But for those who
see Grand Tourismo and need to ask why Need for Speed is better in a different
way, here's the kicker. The game offers five modes of play, plus an arcade and
simulation mode in each of those categories.
The five modes provide elaborate choices for racing. To simply begin, gamers
will want to choose the Single race, which is any track in any car.Practice is
self explanatory, and Tournament Mode is a linear progression in which you earn
accumulative points. As long as you have the highest point total, you still win.
Beat the game as a beginner, and you'll win a sleek, new Jaguar. Beat the game in
expert, and you'll win the Mercedes.
Knockout Mode follows with a different angle. You just want to not finish the
race without being in last place. More like a battle mode sans a save option and
comprised of only two laps, Knockout Mode is a fast, furious balls-to-wall race that
puts an emphasis on the 'need for survival.' It's packed with competitive AI and
clustering racers who remember when you've done them wrong and come back after you.
And of course, there is the Pursuit Mode. If and when the cops slow you down to a
certain speed (like around 40 mph) three times, you'll be arrested and thrown in jail.
But the object is to outsmart the cops. What's cool is that the police react to your
behavior intelligently and like real cops. Use anything in your power to avoid their
speedy pursuit. Drive off-road, access short-cuts, drive them into walls, off the road,
into other cars, whatever it takes.
A lapful of cool options enable you to change just about everything in the game.
Starting with weather conditions, which adversely affect your driving experience,
you can tinker with many other little items as well. When you earn simulation
(yes you need to earn it), you can actually build your cars, and pick slick or
other tires suitable for rough or slippery terrain. Finally, the menu interface
is slick, logical, and extremely cool.
In the end, Need for Speed is a brilliant game, and is a clear winner in the
racing department. It's deep and provides a feel of realism that's phenomenal,
and puts many, many games on both PlayStation and Nintendo 64 to shame. Get this
one and play it with your friends.
